History

Founded on November 29, 1993, belongs to the Diocese of Antipolo is located at No.6 Buenmar Avenue, Greenland Subdivision 1, Nangka, Marikina City, Tel. 948-28-29. The previous parish priest were the late Fr. Jun Arellano; Fr. Rowie Reyes & Fr. Aly Barcinal. Rev. Fr. Giovanni Osias Delfin O. Yago is the fourth & current Parish Priest since March 1, 2007.

The year was 1950. The Pope was Pius XII, considered to be one of the most active popes in history because he update and revised many Church practices and customs during his tenure. A closely knit and a determined Nangka community, composed primarily of farmers, saw the beginning of the parish with the construction of the Nangka chapel in the early months of that year at the present site of the Barangay Hall. Three years later, the chapel was transferred to its current site and it was during this year that the chapel was named in honor of San Isidro Labrador, reflecting the demography of the community. As San Isidro Labrador Chapel, we are under the jurisdiction of the Immaculate Conception Parish. However, from 1950 to 1988, Jesuit priests notably from Loyola House of Studies and East Asian Pastoral Institute which are both located inside the Ateneo de Manila campus in Quezon City, were actively involved especially in the pastoral care of the community. We remember Fr. Mateo Sanchez, S.J., who said the first Sunday Mass on August 25, 1968 and the first Misa de Gallo also that year. He also initiated the formation of the Nangka Catholic Action group which managed the affairs of the Chapel; Fr. Vic Salanga, S.J., took over in 1970 vice Fr. At who was sent to a new mission work; Fr. Makairog Reyes, who was in service long enough to introduce programs like recollections for the youth, catechisms, seminars and catechetical instructions to the school children of Nangka Elementary School with the help of Mrs. Consuelo Chan. Fr. Makoairog was followed in 1982 by a singer-composer priest, Fr. Fruto Ramirez, S.J. and during his term, the Panuluyan, May Flower festival and the October devotion to our Blessed Mother was introduced. The last Jesuit to handle the chapel was Fr. Art Borja, S.J. who served from 1986 to 1988. We remember him for his role in the expansion and reconstruction of the chapel to make it more responsive to the mounting clamor of the growing community for a bigger chapel, and for his patience and perseverance especially in guiding the mini-pastoral council in their activities including fund raising programs. The Catholic Women’s League was also conceived during his term, particularly in 1988.

These Jesuit priests rallied the help and support of the community and the response came in no time from people like Narciso Tud Sr. and Bebe Go who managed the affairs of the chapel in 1972 and introduced a lot of improvements. There were tough times too like that period when the care of the chapel was entrusted in the hands of five women namely Mercedes Tud, Consuelo Chan, Manuela Cruz, Amalia Salen and Gertrudes Sanchez because the elected officers did not live up to expectations in running the affairs of the chapel.

Meantime, in 1985 Parang was separated from Immaculate Conception Parish and thus was born the Holy Family Parish. It also meant the change in affiliation of San Isidro Labrador Chapel from Immaculate Conception Parish to the Holy Family Parish. The mini-pastoral council was born also during this year with Bro. Ric Salvador(+), elected as President. This turn of event seemingly gave the Nangka community the inspiration to expand and reconstruct the chapel. With meager funds and the personal donations of the members of the mini-pastoral council, the task began 1986. Complemented by the zeal of the parishioners and the benevolence of friends here and abroad as well as the generosity of the other parishes, the expanded chapel was completed in 1988 and was blessed by Bishop Protacio Gungon on the feast of San Isidro Labrador on May 15, 1988.

The newly renovated and expanded chapel prompted Fr. Jose Matan, who was then the Parish Priest of Holy Family Parish, to declare Nangka as a sub-parish of Parang. This was significant as it ushered in the holding of weddings and baptisms in the Chapel. It was a move that made the people of Nangka rejoice since it signaled the dawning of a new day for the community-that in a short period of time, the declaration of Nangka as a parish should be forthcoming.

That vision became a reality when the people in the community assisted by Fr. Matan and the Parish Pastoral Council of the Holy Family Parish, signed a petition in October 1992 to declare Nangka a parish. Fortunately, the Bishop of the Diocese promptly responded because in December of that year, he approved the petition.
Thus was born the San Isidro Labrador Parish. The diminutive yet dynamic and ebullient Fr. Efren “Jun” Arellano was designated priest-in-charge of the newly created parish. He was heartily and joyfully welcomed by the Nangka community on December 1, 1992 in his new home – the Nangka Chapel – which became the temporary seat of the new parish. The newly declared parish consisted of ten chapels located in Balubad, Dona Petra, Fairlane Subd., Jaybee Subd., Permaline, St. Benedict Subd, and Twinville Subd.

Seeing the need for a bigger House Prayer, Fr. Jun, together with the officers of the pastoral council led by Bro. Ricardo Salvador as well as the officers of the different mini pastoral concils of the chapels, embarked on an ambitious mission to build a bigger Church befitting the new status as a parish. Armed with a very strong determination and an unshakeable faith, the group felt the mission was attainable; the lack of sufficient resources and logistical support was not enough to deter them from pursuing the gargantuan task ahead. Starting with the purchase of a lot in Greenland Village Phase 1, the construction of a bigger House of God began with the groundbreaking ceremonies on May 1994.
